Location
This photo was taken on a farm in Cunningham, TN during this family's fall 2015 photo shoot. The boys fell in love with swinging on the gate to the pasture, so I had the whole family pose around the gate and the rest is history.Time
This photo was taken during the famed "golden hour", which was probably about 6:00 or 6:15 PM in our neck of the woods. The light was absolutely exquisite.Lighting
I absolutely LOVE golden hour and prefer to shoot only during that time if I can help it. I always like to let a tiny bit of light leak through the top corner or side of the lens, to give that gorgeous sunflare effect. It's part of my signature style, and my clients love that about my work.Equipment
For this photo, I used a Canon 6D with a Tamron 28-75mm lens. I don't use any additional equipment; I hold my camera in my hand so I can freely move around to capture my subjects as they are.Inspiration
I was inspired to take this photo when I saw how much fun the two little boys were having, swinging back and forth on the gate to the pasture. The family were all wearing jeans and country-inspired attire, so I thought this rustic gate would be a perfect "prop" for a family photo. I only got one good shot from this "pose", and it was the perfect marriage of lighting, composition, and subject.Editing
I love post-processing my photos in Photoshop. For this photo, I first ensured that the white balance, clarity, and noise reduction settings were where I wanted them using Adobe Camera RAW, and then I pulled the photo into Photoshop CC for additional tweaks to the saturation and coloring. I also enhanced the sun flare with a light overlay I created myself. In my camera bag
In my bag, I carry my Canon 6D, my Tamron 28-75, a Sigma 70-300, and a Canon 50 mm lens as well. I also carry a speedlight, but I very rarely need to use it, as my favorite time for shooting is the 2 hours before the sun sets each day.Feedback
Play around with angles. Don't be afraid to move even just slightly to your left or right to play around with the composition and lighting. Also, if the sun is high in the sky, you can get down low and shoot upwards to try to capture the sky and the sun in the frame. Be careful, though; if you let in too much light, your subjects will be too dark and your exposure will suffer.
