Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a small vacant lot on the Fort Campbell, KY army post.

Time

This photo was taken during golden hour one day in July.

Lighting

The light coming through the trees was absolutely gorgeous, and I enhanced it in post by placing a gradient and masking it off the areas I didn't want it to cover.

Equipment

I shot this image freehanded with no flash, using my Canon 6D and my Tamron 28-75mm lens.

Inspiration

My daughter wanted to practice doing cartwheels one summer evening and wanted me to watch. The beautiful golden light during that time of day inspired me and I quickly grabbed my camera for a makeshift photo session to shoot her as she practiced.

Editing

I enhanced the color and light in this image using Photoshop CC. I started out by performing a "clean edit" using Camera RAW to correct white balance, shadows, highlights, etc. Then I open the image in Photoshop CC to use apply actions and hand edits to get the artistic look I want in the color and lighting.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my Canon 6D, my Tamron 28-75, and my Sigma 70-300 in my bag. Sometimes I may also carry a tripod, a speedlight, and my 50mm lens.

Feedback

I specifically aim to shoot within the last 45 minutes before sunset to get the richest color, and to keep the sunlight behind and to either the left or right of the subject. If the sun is too low or too directly behind the subject, you'll get a silhouette instead of being able to capture the details of the hair and face, so it's important to check which direction the light is shining before beginning shooting.
