Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph in a field opposite a farm that I drive past it almost every day and I love it, it reminds me of the cover of an old puzzle my husband has of a farm in the 1950's.

Time

This was taken in the golden hour, right before sunset. It was in the spring, as the ground was really wet and muddy, so it was around 6pm or so - a lot of my neighbors waved at my on their way home from work as they drove by :).

Lighting

There was a patch of sun that was coming through some trees, and I had my daughter located close to that as I wanted to be able to backlight her, and I loved the look of the roof of the barns.

Equipment

I used my canon 5D mark III and my 200 f/2.

Inspiration

The farm and image on my husbands old jigsaw puzzle inspired me to take this portrait. I didn't want to do a landscape image, I wanted to truly evoke a reflection to make me think about a time in the past where things were a little simpler, so I added my daughter to it, and found a dress that had a vintage feel to it, and which didn't look out of place on a farm.

Editing

I photograph in raw, which leaves the images looking a little muddy straight out of the camera, so I use a lot of masking and layers to add warmth and dimension.

In my camera bag

I have a range of equipment in my bag. My go to is my canon 5D Mk III, which I usually keep my 85mm 1.2 attached too. If I have space (and I usually make it a point to find space) I will use my 200 f/2, if I need to be closer, it's either the 85mm 1.2 or 50 1.2. I also keep the 35mm, fish eye, tilt shift, 70-200 2.8 and a couple of speedlites (it's a big bag, and pretty heavy).
