This photo was taken on the Gold Coast Australia at the spit, one of my favourite spots to capture sunrises and sunsets, the open beaches and isolated feeling makes this spot a unique place to photograph.Time
This photo was taken in the early morning at sunrise, i arrived with a friend and wanted to capture the beauty of the sunrise and the bright golden rays shining down onto the beach. I remember waking up at 3:30 am in the freezing cold and looked out side and the sky was filled with clouds, when we arrived i thought there was going to be no chance of capturing the sunrise because of the clouds but then as the sun started rising the sky started to clear and i was lucky enough to capture this image for the few minutes that the sun was showing.Lighting
The lighting in this image i thought just worked perfectly, i wanted to capture the reflections of the sand and water, i had to time it perfectly to wait for the wave to retract just enough to get the reflection i wanted. I also tried to get the sun rays coming through the clouds.Equipment
This photo was shot on a Nikon D90 with an 18-55mm lens, i also used a sturdy manfrotto tripod with the 222 joystick head to quickly get the camera into position. no other equipment was required.Inspiration
I love nature and am always looking for that perfect shot that shows mother nature at its best, sunrises are so unique and different everyday and most people don't see them each morning. seeing the different sunrises inspires me each day to capture the beauty of the world.Editing
This photo has had minimal post-processing, the colours in the image were already strong so i only increased saturation the slightest amount to make them 'pop', i also increased the black tones and the highlights to even out the exposure because i didn't use a gradient filter. Other then that there wasn't much post-processing to do.In my camera bag
I try and keep all my equipment with me because I never know when I might need it but the most important equipment I carry is my Nikon D90 with a 18-55mm, 30mm 1.8 and a 55-200mm lens; I also carry spare batteries, memory cards, filters, a Gopro hero 3 black, the nikon coolpix AW130, 3 hard drives, wireless remote trigger, cameras manual and my 15 inch macbook pro. other bits and pieces and accessories are also kept in my bag as well.Feedback
capturing sunrises can be a difficult and frustrating task, my advice is to plan ahead because when you start shooting you don't have very long until the sun has risen, before I shoot I go to the spot beforehand and check out the area and the best place to setup, even take a photo on your phone so you know exactly where you wanted to shoot. Also the night before have everything ready and planned so you don't have to do it in the morning, check the weather forecast and all your equipment this way you will have the best chance of capturing the perfect shot. Also get up early, I can't tell you how many times I have been rushing to get to the beach on time before the sunrises; if you get there before first light you will have time to setup and prepare. And lastly if you want to get the perfect sunrise shot be patient, you probably won't get the shot you wanted at first, i certainly didn't but if you are determined and keep practicing and experimenting you will get that perfect shot you have always wanted.
