This photo was taken at Mono Lake in California, after a Sierra Club hiking/photography trip to 1000 Islands Lake.Time
This photo was taken at sunrise. Two other members from the trip and I got up early to go to the lake for a sunrise photo. As we were walking to find a good spot, the pinks in the sky were already developing. We finally reached the edge of the lake and found about 15 other photographers already there taking pictures! Talk about a photo op site!Lighting
The sunrise colors on this morning were amazing. The reflection of the colors on the water just enhanced the image. The golden hour ( around sunrise and sunset ) is king!Equipment
This was shot with a Canon SL1 camera and a Tamron 16-300mm lens. It was taken at 16mm at f/20 for 30 sec at ISO100. I used a MeFoto tripod and a neutral density filter.Inspiration
One fellow hiker on the trip knew three of us were staying on a couple of days to go to Yosemite. He suggested we stop at Mono Lake for sunrise, as it is a very photographic spot. He was correct!Editing
I utilized Lightroom in my post processing, bringing out the highlights and shadows, increasing vibrance, and lightening the foreground by adding a graduated filter.In my camera bag
When I am hiking I want light weight and simple. I take my Canon SL1 due to it being one of the lightest SLR cameras. To keep it simple, I prefer carrying one lens. By utilizing the Tamron 16-300mm I get a full focal range. In addition I carry my neutral density filter, circular polarizer filter, and tripod. Finally, I take extra batteries and cards.Feedback
Give yourself plenty of time to prepare by arriving early; the sunrise moves fast! Because you are using a long shutter speed, you need a tripod and neutral density filter to achieve the smooth water and clouds. And don't forget to enjoy the moment of beauty!
