Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while on safari in Serengeti National Park in Tanzania

Time

This was taken in May of 2012 just before 8am. When on the hunt to photograph animals in the wild you need to get going right away in the morning.

Lighting

All-natural lighting for this one. I'm not great with flash setups, or inside shots, but give me a beautiful morning with great natural light and I can take a good photo or two.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon1 V1 with a 1 NIKKOR 10-100mm lens and no other equipment

Inspiration

Standing up in the Land Rover while surveying the beautiful landscape there were so many animals to photograph. Another in this series includes a giraffe, an elephant, and an ostrich. When you visit a zoo, all the animals are compartmentalized within their species. Seeing how they are in the wild, with no barriers between them, just coexisting, has changed my perspective on zoos.

Editing

I didn't. I'm not the greatest at post-processing so I usually go with what I shot.

In my camera bag

With the advent of not terrible cameras on phones, I've always got my Samsung Galaxy S21 at hand. I also like to travel with a small point & shoot, usually a Panisonic Lumix. Sometimes you don't want something big and bulky. Then I've got the Nikon1 V1. I'm hoping to upgrade to a true DSLR in the near future but in the meantime, this is my standard kit.

Feedback

Morning and evening are great times to get shots of animals in the Serengeti. And take lots of photos. I'm not the best photographer in the world, but if you've got the eye to see the shot and a little bit of skill, you'll end up with some great shots in the end, even if you do need separate the seeds from the chaff.
