Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a rented dance studio. Nat and I have been talking about doing an outdoor pole dancing shoot for awhile but haven't really gotten around to nailing down a good outdoor location yet, so we decided to just hire out an indoor space to do some tests.

Time

This was done in the middle of the day. As it was an indoor shoot, we weren't really going to be hindered by changing weather and light conditions.

Lighting

The lighting was just a couple of speedlights. The keylight was in a softbox, triggered via radio and the rimlight was just a bare flash which was set to slave mode.

Equipment

This was shot with a Sony a6000 with a 16-70mm F4 lens. Main light was a Cactus RF60 speedlight triggered with a Cactus V5 radio trigger. The rim light was just a bare YongNuo YN460-II.

Inspiration

I've always been inspired by dancers and I have been doing a bit of dance photography for a while since my partner is a dancer. Having met Nat at the gym where I work, we started chatting about having photographs made and this was pretty much a test bed for what is to come.

Editing

Not much processing at all, really. Just some minor adjustments to the colour and contrast in Lightroom and Photoshop. I tend not to do very much more to the images that I capture.

In my camera bag

It depends. I have since sold the Sony kit as I am more used to shooting with my Nikon D700. Also, having to get lenses for two different systems was proving to be a bit of an expensive exercise! I have replaced the Sony with the Fuji X100T because I usually shoot climbers outdoors and the leaf shutter on the Fuji gives me more lighting options using relatively low powered speedlights. Shooting at 1/1000s at f/2 outdoors in full sun and still have enough power from small speedlights is amazing! Now I alternate between my Nikon D700 and my Fuji X100T.

Feedback

Not really sure about this one... As I mainly shoot dancers and climbers, I'd say always try and capture the 'peak' of a movement. This is usually the pose that a dancer would want the audience to see. It's always easier with a planned shot like this one, but quite a bit trickier when shooting something live. I guess if this is what you want to shoot, practice, practice, practice.
