Location
This particular shot is done in a local coffee shop, to be honest I am most proud of this photo because everything was against it. The place was tight and I was with my 85mm manual lens but the subject was really interesting and I thought I have to do this right because this shot has a potential to be really good. Here it is.Time
Early morning! I think if you want to photograph people, early morning is the perfect time to do it. Most of people are in the right emotions, lost in their thoughts and if you are lucky to have a great coffee and great people to photograph Oh, Enjoy! :)Lighting
Well for me nothing can beat morning light and subject near the big window. It was a rainy autumn morning. Only good light source was that big window from the right side, everything else was in the deep shadow. That is good situation for shots I like to make, full of contrast and dark emotions :).Equipment
This was the situation of great moment but wrong camera and wrong lens. Hey that happened to all of us right!?:). My camera was digital rebel xti from Canon, 12 MP camera that really, really don't like ISO over 400, and this was light for 1.4 400000 ISO, yes i like to exaggerate a little bit :). To make everything even worst I combine that camera with my Zeiss 1.5 85 mm manual lens. *cry* So I am at (I think) 400 ISO, too close to my subject so I was bending backward and my TANK of a lens (all metal and glass zeiss lens) was manual #Cryrealhard. I done what I can...shoot. -Oh what a lovely dark dark shot, just as I like it- :).Inspiration
To be honest I like to photograph people and sometimes objects only if they have something that I like to call -Dark mood-. I shoot most of my work in autumn and winter to capture that emotion. This scene was exactly what I love to photograph so my real inspiration was that dark mood feeling and a great subject that begs to be photographed.Editing
On this shot I did really small amount of editing. Desaturated the shot, it was color shot originally, darken the shadows and made the shot more contrasty. Added some grain and that is all.In my camera bag
In my first years in photography, I was like a pack mule, carrying around every piece of equipment I got. Now when I go to shoot something I carry only one camera often Canon 6D and 40mm 2.8 prime lens. Zeiss 1.4 85mm is still my go to lens for portrait and head photography. Everything else; tripods, flashes, reflector is at home collecting dust. For me photography needs to be easy and big lenses and cameras are in the way of that.Feedback
Light and Dark, Contrast. Search for places where deep darkness is penetrated by a smooth light (Window in a dark room). Try to feel the emotion of the subject, wait for the facial expressions to kick in and reflect the mood that you are going for. Don't rush it, give yourself some time and be quiet. Emotions don like too much noise, they hide from it. Alen.
