Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot on our farm near Perenjori in the Northern Wheatbelt of Western Australia. On this particular sunset most of the sky was filled with colour it was amazing, but I wanted to capture something a bit different to all the other sunset photos I've seen.

Time

It was the 1st of June, 2015, when I captured this photo, so the sunset was pretty early. I noticed colour start building in the clouds around 5:30pm and I quickly grabbed my camera and raced outside to my go-to location for sunsets, which is very close to the house luckily.

Lighting

It was mostly overcast at the time of the sunset, but luckily there was a break near the horizon which created the spectacular colouring!

Equipment

I took this with my Canon EOS 600d with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens attached. No tripod was used, as is often the case for me.

Inspiration

I love the fact that every single sunset is different in some way, and I just want to photograph as many of them as possible. I especially loved this sunset because of the cloud coverage enabling such an amazing amount of colour to appear.

Editing

I have recently started using Lightroom and I'm absolutely in love with it! But I took this particular photo before I had Lightroom, and so there is very little editing been done to this image, all I did was a bit of a boost in brightness and also the saturation. My editing style is to keep things looking as realistic as possible, so I do minimal editing on most of my images.

In my camera bag

I don't have a lot of equipment so I'm always carrying everything with me, I have my Canon 600d, which is my first DSLR. I have 2 zoom lenses, an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens and a 55-250mm f/4-5.6 lens. I also carry a 60mm f/2.8 prime lens, which is mainly used for macros. In the tripod line I have a Joby gorilla pod and also a standard generic tripod. I have also been experimenting with long exposures and so I have a ND .8 filter, as well as a UV filter and a Circular Polarising filter (very handy for cloud photography!) all 3 filters are Hoya. If I'm doing some action photography or want to quickly set up a time lapse I carry my GoPro Hero 4 Silver. I would love to be able to expand my collection of equipment, and also get my hands on a full-frame DSLR, such as the 5d Mk iii.

Feedback

I think whenever you are photographing sunsets you have to be prepared and take a good look around the location beforehand to find the best views. Sunsets can also be unpredictable, a sky that looks not very promising can all of sudden light up and create spectacular results, even if it's only for a minute or 2, so i think you have to be prepared for a few failures, but you can also expect to end up with some beautiful images! I just love being able to capture the beauty of rural West Australia.
