With a great team behind me I took this photo in my studio @jeromebertrandstudio in Montreal. This is where i’m Most comfortable even if I like shooting outside!Time
I believe it was a calm evening and our model was just back from local designer Évelyne @whitelabel designs and had grabbed a few outfits for the night.Lighting
Although we wanted a fairly simple lighting and focus more on emotions and the way the clothes appeared, there was some time before figuring out the best combination. The nice touch of an angled backlight helped us bring dimensions to a rather close cutting frame and the rest was just very soft but « beauty « lighting as required for fashion shots of elegant but sober dress.Equipment
I always shoot with a 50mm fixed 1.4 on a canon 5D mark 2 . I find this combination satisfying and sharp. As it is not so telephoto it gives volume to the subject and the right angle will magnify her as well, empowering if you will. In terms of light I use profoto 1200 and alien bees on a boom tripod with a beauty dish. I do not light the white background so it has a gradient to light gray which I find ads to the elegance.Inspiration
Marjorie Hardy was a model with whom I had worked before for a book project and she needed more « fashion » photos in her portfolio so we joined hands with whitelabel to hit a two target with the same pitch.Editing
Well as usual there is a lot of skin retouching that helps smooth out and freshen the overall look but other than enhancing a bit the backlight and correcting some flaws on the wardrobe, not much has been majorly transformed. Beautiful model and great clothes always helps you ;)In my camera bag
A simple camera and a lot of enthusiasm!!!Feedback
I would say start practicing with a friend who has lots of time to help you and carve your light one at a time. Yes it’s sounds obvious but I see a lot of buddy’s throwing in tons of light on a shoot and kind of loose control of it all. Start with your main and see how that reacts to a similar dress and skin tone, then ad in the fill to lighten the atmosphere and recover strong shadows (but don’t overpower your main) then perhaps ad some oufm with a side or backlight. Keep it simple and maybe turn of the other lights when you adjust one to really see what your doing. Then the attitude is all about choosing the right model that can give it to you and establish if possible a basic relationship with so that the tension is left behind on as given shoot. You want some tension but the kind that any professional wants to give their best so that at the end of the day everyone felt like they have accomplished something to be proud of. Thanks for reading and feel free to ask for more specifics if needed
