Location
This Photo has been taken in Trieste (Italy) dock, in the down town.Time
It was almost sunset endLighting
When I saw the scene I was impressed by the light and colours and I realized that it may be a good HDR shootEquipment
I used a Canon EOS 1Ds III and the EF 17-40 F4 L lensInspiration
The most inspiring source was the light and the calm of the sea in the bay area. Colours and contrast was really nice and I was almost sure that a good HDR was possible.Editing
I am not a fan of post production, I simply used Photomatix to blend the 3 shoots and then a quick balance and contrast. In my camera bag
Usually I go out very light. just a camera and a lens. usually the 24-105. If I know I am going to take nature or landscapes I use to put a wide angle lens (12-24 or 17-40) or a telephoto lens (70-200 or 120-300)Feedback
For a good HDR, imho the best advice is to observe the scene. Some are really poor to realize in HDR, other are really very nice. The experience may guide you in the best choice of the subject but in general, smooth gradients, or uniform surfaces are not suggested for HDR
