Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the coastal town of Dover here in the UK, where I was standing is an old coach park for the castle with a view of the castle in front of the sea.

Time

I cannot remember the exact time of day although I believe it was early evening, I had been out for a long walk with my camera and was stuck for inspiration the entire time but walking home the light was perfect, the sky just worked and looking back at the castle, I just saw this and knew I was stuck for inspiration no more.

Lighting

I, as much as the next photographer, love shooting photos in the golden hour when it comes to landscapes but I also love the play of light when there are shadows, harsh lights or typically just difficult lighting conditions as I find these tend to produce some of the most impactful images you can ever produce and this is a classic example of that.

Equipment

Canon EOS 70D Handheld with a SIGMA 18-250mm lens and a ND filter attached

Inspiration

While I lived in the area, the castle was my neighbour and a great focus for me, I loved how it loomed over the town like a watchful guardian, ever ready to stand and defend in the town's time of need, many saw it as oppressive, domineering and controlling but for me, it was a sign of hope but also mystery. I wanted to bring this feeling into the image, not just wanting it to be another photo but one that had a feeling of fantasy and calm while also not ignoring the history of the building and how it was not just a place of protection but also power.

Editing

I'd be lying if I said I hadn't! Many of my images are post-processed in such a way that I feel takes the literal term of Photography (painting with light) and use it to give my images the painting, fantasy, otherworldly feeling, making it just at home on canvas as on fine art paper. I don't just hold a camera and click the shutter, I put myself into the image, I see the image as I want it to be and how it feels to me, then I use post-processing to bring that to life. Photography is an art form where reality can become fantasy or something in between.

In my camera bag

My bag is typically light, I have my main shooter - Canon 70D with the Sigma 18-250mm lens, back up camera (and the first ever DSLR that I owned) - 450d with the standard 18-55mm Canon EFS lens, a set of filters for each, spare batteries for both camera, cleaning kit, tripod and anything else I need for the day be it a long hike on the trail, casual stroll around my local wildlife parks or an intense cross country ride on the mountain bike.

Feedback

The best advice I can give? Don't count out anything, even the seemingly mundane can become an object of fantasy and mystery. Also don't just look for what is there, look for what there could be but also look within, see a subject and feel what it's making you feel, allow your photography and post-processing to express that feeling. Photography without passion is just a subject, while photography with passion, with emotions and feelings... That can take you anywhere.
