Location
This photo was taken at the home of the dog's owner where I'd seen this rug and the dog a thousand times. But never together.Time
It was almost 7 at night.Lighting
The light was dim-a mixture of minimal natural light and two lamps which were in the room. I still cranked it to 2000 asa to get the shot almost wide open at 1/30. Fortunately, I had that lens handy.Equipment
The shot was hand held with a Nikon d7000 and a Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G, my favorite lens.Inspiration
Seeing the dog on that rug made me laugh as the camouflage effect was so obvious. When I first looked at her I noticed only the eyes. I wanted to get that effect so I returned with my camera the next day. In the end this was a better way to go.Editing
I use Aperture. I also use Silver Effex Pro. I did minimal tweaking on contrast. That's about it.In my camera bag
I have a Nikon d7100 now. I like the size and weight. I like the 35 1.8 enormously. I often use a 16-85 and the 70-300. They are all fantastic lenses. I also keep a Canon G12 around for easy carrying.Feedback
This particular shot was planned. Most of my favorites aren't. Sometimes the most ordinary things present interesting, witty, unexpected opportunities. One need only keep their eyes open and be alert so as not to miss them. I find though that just having your camera ready is the key. For shots like this it just takes a bit of understanding of lighting and a bit of post. Not complicated.
