Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Hallett Cove beach in South Australia. It was about 40 mins drive from Adelaide and about 30 mins walk from the car park into the conservation park which will bring you to these amazing rocks. I am a self-taught photographer and I am interested to try out different kind of photography. This was my first attempt in long exposure photography.

Time

This probably one of my favourite images I made. I remembered I went to this place for a landscape photography workshop with other club members from the Adelaide University Photography Club. It was close to sunset when we arrived to the location. I have to balance my camera on a tripod due to slow shutter speed and quickly got a few test shots. The photo by itself looks amazing on the camera.

Lighting

This is probably one of my lucky shot and I figured out the right settings in my first attempt in long exposure photography. I wanted the photo looks good to have silky wave while having a balance skylight and clear details on the rocks. I remember borrowing a bag of ND filters from Tony and start working on it like a headless chicken, as that was the first time I work on ND filters and the sunset has passed. After lots of trial and error, I ended up using 2 graduate ND4 and 1 ND 2 filters and viola, this is it!

Equipment

This photo was taken on Canon 650D with Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 at 17mm on a Velbon tripod and of course 2 graduate ND4 and 1 ND 2 filters on an adapter.

Inspiration

Before the workshop, I did some research on the Internet regarding long exposure photography to get some inspiation, Viewbug is one of my favourites, since I have subscribed its newsletter, so I get regular e-mail about others’ photos for reference.

Editing

Yes, I did some light touch up in my post-processing work using lightroom to adjust the contrast, highlight and shadow, I also used localise brush to increase sharpness in the rocks. Then, I perform some dodge and burn in Photoshop just to balance the area that need to be darker or brighter. The photo looks great but it looks just like any other landscape photo, so I have decided to make it more mysterious by using Nik Colour Efex to enhance the colour saturation and contrast.

In my camera bag

Depends on my shooting preference, if I need to go for heavy duty function, I will usually pack my Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 16-35 f/2.8 and Sigma Art 35mm f/1.4. If I need to travel light and for casual shooting, Fujifilm X100s and Leica M6 or Rolleicord are always my favourite.

Feedback

A couple of the major abilities of a landscape photographer are patience and good planning skills. In my opinion, to capture something similar, the photographer will have to plan and wait for the right time to take the photo. Your gear and equipment, weather, duration and distance of the journey, seasons, moon phase and its effect to the tide, and risk assessment throughout the photoshoot (you wouldn’t want this photoshoot to be your one-way ticket) must be taken into consideration. Last but not least, you have to be adventurous and have good stamina to discover new places which may make your photo stand out the crowd.
