Location
I took this photo over the Missouri River near Yankton, South Dakota. I was positioned on the South Dakota shoreline looking toward Nebraska.Time
It was late morning on an overcast day. Usually I will not be out with my camera during the mid-day.Lighting
There was enough sun trying to penetrate the cloud cover to give the clouds an almost iridescent shimmer. The balloon picked the light up in a curiously mottled way.Equipment
I shot this with my Sony A33. Hand-held. Lens: Minolta Maxxum AF 100-200.Inspiration
Nothing shouts "Americana" like a hot-aired balloon sporting patriotic colors. I makes us think of the County Fair and Summertime. The pilot radiates the feeling of "adventure" as those on the ground try to imagine how he feels.Editing
I did no post-processing on this shot.In my camera bag
Currently I carry my Sony A58 with several Minolta lens'. Usually a 35-70, 70-210, 100-200, 100-300. Of course all the lens cleaning items. Several filters, my remote, spare batteries, and a couple of lens hoods. My tripod is always handy.Feedback
Keep you eyes wide open. Unique and beautiful shots are often available in the most unlikely places. Many times, common things can become very beautiful. The correct placement of your subject matter can make or break a photo. Read up on the rule-of-thirds and think about it when you frame your subject. Also, there are magical times of the day...early morning, late afternoon and early evening. Certain cloudy days are also your friend. Every shot will not be a masterpiece. Take many and experiment with the various ways to present your vision. Have fun and include a young person so you can play it forward.
