Location
This photo was taken at a rural Amish farm Near Arthur, Illinois. The large draft horse was near the fence adjacent to the roadway.Time
It was early morning and I was on patrol as a Law Enforcement Officer for a rural Sheriff's Office in central Illinois.Lighting
It was a typical dreary winter day, with overcast and a winter morning fog.Equipment
I am an amature photographer, with basic equipment that will generate a decent photo It is a simple point and shoot camera. I carry a Nikon, wide 5x zoom, 14.0 Megapixel COOLPIX. It has a built in 4.6 - 23 mm lens.Inspiration
I saw this big draft horse near the fence along the road foraging for a little something to eat. As I pulled along the shoulder of the road, the horse just stood there and looked at me. I was taken by his size and the shaggy winter coat. I thought the contrast with the the snow and the sky would make a good photo. I positioned myself so that I would have the trees in the shot. Then I took a couple of photos so I could sort through them later and pick the best one. I must say I was so focused on the large draft horse, I did not see the the black horse in the background until after I reviewed the photo.Editing
When I review my photos on a computer, the only thing I do is crop it and occasionally hit the auto adjust. I was pleasantly surprised to see the black horse in the background when I reviewed the shots and made sure to keep him in the shot when I cropped it. It gave the photo some much needed depth and interest.In my camera bag

To be able to capture a good photograph you have to be aware of your surroundings. As an amature I don't limit myself to just one subject. I enjoy taking photographs of the things I observe then preserving them with a photograph. You can develope and eye for good shots by keeping the rule of thirds in mind. The lighting, the positioning and the subject matter all need to be taken into account. Looking at other photographers work in VB will not only provide some superb photographic viewing, but it will also provide some insight into what others are doing and how they are doing it. Their photographs will provide ideas and techniques to make you a better photographer.
