Behind The Lens

Location

On the grounds of the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida.

Time

Late afternoon on a late December day.

Lighting

I waited until the end of the day to be sure to be able to capture horse and rider in silhouette. We I started shooting I discovered that when I lay down on the ground I could place the sun perfectly between horse and rider.

Equipment

Nikon D610 with Nikon 70-200 f2.8 lens.

Inspiration

This is my wife Lyn and her horse Etta. Etta's full name is Silhouette, and so I thought an image of Lyn and Etta in silhouette would be appropriate. When I saw the opportunity to make a sun star and place it between them I asked Lyn to kiss Etta and we created this photo.

Editing

Minimal in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Nikon D610, Nikon 24-70 f2.8, Nikon 70-200 f2.8, Nikon 12-24 f3.5.5.6, Nikon 10.5 f2.8, 2 Nikon SB-900 flashes, Nikon SU-800 flash trigger.

Feedback

Go in with a plan in mind, but be open to other possibilities. I began this session shooting from a high angle to use the lake and its specular light as the background. But when I saw the opportunity to get low and use the sun in a different way I did so, and this ended up being the best shot of the session.
