So powerful, not just the expression in the eyes but the hands are also a dominant in this photo, at least that is my view. I think it is a wonderful piece of art.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my house. Over this past summer.

Time

This was taken in the latter part of the afternoon in the summer.

Lighting

I wanted to give it a a dark emotional feeling so I took this photo later in the afternoon to have a little less natural light, but just enough to have a good photo. Just not taken mid afternoon when the sun is high and bright. I took this during the golden hour.

Equipment

I used my NikonD3300 camera with an 18-55mm lens. Since I was using natural light I didn’t need to have any use of speed lights or flash.

Inspiration

Over this summer we have had a lot of turmoil with BLM,Covid, mass riots and I wanted to capture a photo that was emotional and would make you go wow I feel that! This photo represents that not all abuse is physical not all mental health is worn on our face. A lot of the times we all suffer in silence and that’s why silence can be so deadly and we need to change that. We need to be louder and those who have or had endured abuse or mental health you’re never alone and there are people out there to help you. You will never be judged by good people who want to help you. So always reach out to your loved ones or friends make sure they are doing okay.

Editing

Yes after the photo was taken I needed to darken it a tad in the background. Lift any shadows around the eyes. Turn the image to black and white and then added a faded look to it so you get the fear and the darkness of it all.

In my camera bag

I typically have my 18-55mm lens then I have a 70-300mm lens a macro lens attachment. I use my Nikon 18-55mm lens the most. Always running around chasing my kiddos so having a smaller lens to where I can be up close and personal is what I use most and prefer. For places like the beach I like to use my extend lens. The Nikon 70-300mm so I can zoom in capture moments but try and keep my equipment from getting destroyed by the water. Unless I am doing long exposure shots of waves or the sunsets at the beach then I will use my tripod and my Nikon 18-55mm lens.

Feedback

Don’t over think it! I know sometimes we all get into a creative rut, but the best ideas come when we are just letting our brains relax and taking in everything that’s going on. Helps open up our minds and then to me that’s when my creative processes start to flow in. Look to other photographers as well or Wherever you can get inspiration from to get your creative process going. Once you open that door it will just flow in and you won’t ever want it to stop.
