Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the Mercardo de Urubamba (Urubamba Market) in the Sacred Valley of Peru.

Time

I have been working as a Guide in Peru for the past 10+ years. I like to get out in the morning before my clients wake up. I left my room early in the morning to get myself a fresh smoothie breakfast and brought my camera along. The market is generally a little quieter at sunrise around 6:30am. This was taken in the early morning hours when the market first opens.

Lighting

The early morning at the market is a bit quieter, so it gives me a clearer mind to focus intentionally on where and what to shoot. The morning sun was peeping in through the windows and open entryways giving a nice glow to the entire market. I decided to ascend the stairs and study the market from above akin to how the sunlight penetrates through the windows.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D850 handheld with Nikkor AF-S Zoom 28 - 300mm F/3.5-5.6 lens.

Inspiration

Peru is my second home. As a Guide there for the past 10+ years, one of my favorite things about spending time in the Andes is the access to fresh and affordable healthy food. I get a fresh smoothie every morning, I take a seat on one of the benches, and I chat with the vendors and just watch and feel the world around me. It's a wonderful way to greet the day. The markets are such an integral and vibrant part of the culture in the Andes. They are a place of commerce, community, color and palpable energy. I wanted to showcase the beauty of fresh food and the market. I also wanted to highlight the long hours the vendors spend sitting in their small stalls. It's such a tough job. Wherever you travel in the world, if you really want to dive deeper into a culture...visit the local markets.

Editing

Very minimal post processing. I raised the shadows slightly to get a bit more pop that revealed the true colors our eyes see in person, and I scaled back the highlights just a bit to get more texture on all of the fruit.

In my camera bag

It really depends on what I am shooting. In this particular case I carry light. My main body is a Nikon D850. When I am traveling, I like to carry a go to all around 28-300 lens along with a 24-70 2.8.

Feedback

In general, photography is a form of expression and our lens or eye to the world. We all view and feel it differently. I would suggest just wandering around even in your own neighborhood with a true sense of curiosity. You make the familiar unfamiliar. Try to see things in a different and unique way that speak to you. I tend to shy away from where all the other photographers go and like to capture the more 'mundane' daily moments. So much beauty can be found in everyday interactions. You just have to put yourself out there, be willing to wander and have patience and be open and receptive to people who you come across.
