Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the first night that I arrived on Fraser Island. I just bought my first DSLR camera, a Canon 200D and was very excited to try it out. I took photos of all my adventures while I served in the Navy with an old compact camera without much thought about what I was doing so this was my first attempt at being an amateur photographer.

Time

This photo was the one that stood out from all the other photos that I took on this weekend getaway. I strolled down to the beach from our resort room with 30 minutes to spare before sunset. I setup my tripod and then took a few photos to see which settings looked best as there was a lot of cloud cover in the sky and I wasn't sure if I was going to capture a sunset at all that evening.

Lighting

The only lighting that I had was the natural lighting and somewhat diffused lighting from the cloud cover. This helped make this shot stunning as when the sun broke through the clouds ever so lightly it made the sky look like it was on fire and gave a path for the light to follow and slowly decrease in intensity the closer it got to me. I was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.

Equipment

I took this shot using a tripod, Canon 200D and a Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5 - 5.6 IS STM Lens.

Inspiration

I was on a weekend getaway with my beautiful wife and without our lovely children. My wife was so understanding by letting me take time away from her to focus on the beautiful surroundings and picturesque views that Fraser Island has in abundance. As it turned out the clouds started to disperse just at the right time for me to take this photo. As they say here in Queensland,"Beautiful one day, perfect the next." For that moment in time I was at peace and in awe of the beauty that I was witnessing.

Editing

I did use Cyberlink PhotoDirector to do some post-processing. Nothing to fancy, I increased the vibrance, contrast and saturation slightly and decreased the exposure. I did this to the raw data file and the photo came to life. As I'm new to processing with photo software I didn't experiment as much to see how I could improve the photo.

In my camera bag

Since taking this photo I've expanded my inventory. I now enjoy shooting with my Canon 5D Mark IV. I have also added a Tamron SP 70-300mm DI lens which is fun to use, a Canon EF Macro 100mm L series lens as well as a Canon EF 17-40mm L series lens. With these I hope to cover most of the photo opportunities that may arise. I still use the Canon 200D when the occassion presents itself but am happy trying to pass on what little knowledge I have onto my children in the hope that they will catch the photography bug.

Feedback

Be prepared and have the equipment for what you intend to photograph. Have patience and don't rush what you intend to photgraph. Let the intended scene tell a story if that is what you want to capture or let it show the beauty that surrounds us. As humans we all have a unique perspective of life through our own experiences, as photographers we have the ability to capture this perspective and experience and showcase it in our photography. When I take a photo of a landscape it is because I have seen something that has stirred an emotion or a feeling within me. I hopefully then can replicate the same emotions and feelings in others from the photo that I have taken. When this occurs, I know I've captured and done justice to the landscape shot.
