Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in Mayrhofen, Austria. I spend a lot of my time hiking and taking photos in national parks and this area of Austria was outstanding. From the village of Mayrhofen, I took the Penkenbahn up to the mountain to be greeted with some of the most amazing view points.Time
This photo was taken around mid-morning in the summer, the lighting was quite harsh at this time and I would have preferred to have been on the mountain for sunrise but unfortunately, I was at the mercy of the cable car operating times. Luckily, there was still a lot of early morning haze visible in the distant mountains, providing some lovely layers in the valley which softened up the distance and I felt added a lot of depth.Lighting
The image was quite flat out of the camera and I had to work hard in post to bring out the contrast. There was a beautiful haze, though, through the valley in the distance which I wanted to capture before it disappeared.Equipment
This was shot, handheld, using the Canon M50 and 15-45mm kit lens. It was one of the first times using this camera and is perfect for hiking as it is very small and light.Inspiration
I was hiking up the trail and noticed this bench. What really struck me was the outstanding beauty of the whole area. The bench, to me, was the perfect place where you could stop and take everything in, while letting your worries and stress drain out of you. Coming from London, which is very busy, this felt like the polar opposite to everyday life and time felt like it had stopped and you could stay in that moment forever.Editing
This photo required some post-processing. As it was taken around mid morning, I had to process the mountains and bench separately to the sky. Most of the processing was performed using Lightroom. In my camera bag
In my camera bag right now is a Canon Eos R with the 24-105mm L lens and a 70-300mm L lens. These two lenses are perfect and provide very sharp images. I also feel that they cover generally anything I want to shoot on a typical day. I also have my Kase Filters, shutter release cable and, of course, my 3 Legged Thing tripod. The set up is not the most ideal as on a long hike, the bag weighs a ton, but I know I have all bases covered.Feedback
Photography is all about capturing what speaks to you. My advice is to just go out and shoot what means something to yourself and you will get the most satisfaction out of this. When you find a shot that you want to capture, I would also suggest slowing down. Think about your camera settings, check your focus and take a few different pictures. Change the settings and move position, when you get back home, you can then see which works the best and use this to improve the next time.
