Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken on Cable Beach, Broome in the north of Western Australia in 2016. The beach is renowned for it's sunset camel rides, and this makes it very popular with photographers.

Time

The perfect time of day for a sunset shot is obviously sunset, so this one was taken at around 5.30pm, in early August, which is late winter in Australia. This was also at the time of an outgoing tide, which gave a large expanse of wet sand..perfection for those beautiful reflections. And the icing on the cake was the great bank of clouds on the horizon.

Lighting

I was very lucky with the lighting, being able to catch the sun breaking through the clouds, and the rays of sunlight above. The cloud bank caused the scene to be a bit darker than it normally would have been, which worked well. This gave a softer silhouette effect.

Equipment

This was a hand held shot using my Nikon D800, with a 28-300mm lens. I increased the ISO to 400, which allowed a shutter speed of 1/1000 sec. No other additional equipment was required.

Inspiration

A shot of a camel train silhouetted against a glowing sunset, reflected in the wet sand is an iconic Broome shot. You can drive your 4WD down onto the beach, and relax while waiting for the perfect shot, which we did on many occasions. I have many variations of the camels trains at sunset, but this was probably my most successful.

Editing

Originally the raw image was processed in Photoshop, with additional tweaking from the original Nik Software plugin Color Efex Pro. Over the years different adjustments have been made, so it is a bit difficult to pin down on specific processing. Currently the majority of my processing is done with Skylum's Luminar 4 and Aurora HDR 2019. I will also use Topaz Studio 2.

In my camera bag

My kit is usually very simple. I always have my iPhone 8+ which has a great camera built in. As they say, the best camera is the one you have with you, and in recent years a good portion of my photos have been generated by my iPhone. The quality is great under most circumstances. For those more technical shots, I always use my Nikon D800 with the Nikon 28-300 lens. I also have a 16-35 wide angle which often use for landscape photography and car shows.

Feedback

The most important considerations for this type of shot are the time of day, the weather and the tides. Although this is a classic style of shot, many other variations are possible, and the only limitation is your imagination.
