Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Barrenjoey Lighthouse in Palm Beach, NSW, Australia

Time

This image was taken around 1 AM.

Lighting

This is a stacked image of 250+ shots taken to capture the star trails.

Equipment

The following equipment was used for this image: 1) Nikon D7000 with 18-105mm kit lens 2) Sigma EF-10 flash for one of the shots 3) Tripod

Inspiration

I've always been inspired by star trails and astro photography. This was my first attempt to shoot star trails inspired by Peter Zelinka. This was a terrific experience going all alone to a secluded lighthouse with a 30 minute uphill trek in the dark powered only by my mobile torch.

Editing

This is a stacked composite of 250+ shots. Colour corrections were done in Lightroom and stacking and blending done in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Now I use a Nikon D750 with 50mm, 105 mm mostly. I have a 200-500 mm for any bird photography. I also have my Sigma EF-10 flash and a set of NiSi filters for landscape photography.

Feedback

Check the weather conditions before you start off on any astro photography. Make sure it is a clear sky with a new moon (or close to new moon). Go to a location with minimal light pollution from the city. Ensure you have warm clothing, water and a chair since this will take a long time. Use as wide focal length as possible, large aperture, high ISO as you can go for your camera. The shutter speed for this one was at 25 seconds. Set the camera intervalometer to take about 250 - 400 shots with a 5-10 second interval between shots.
