Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of the Opera house was taken from Hickson park reserve in the The Rocks, Sydney.

Time

This was taken at around 8.30 PM. It was a memorable image for me to capture a long exposure shot between grills on a crowded Australia Day celebration.

Lighting

Opera House was lit magnificently for the Australia Day celebrations. The long exposure and low aperture created a nice smooth scene with light bursts.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7000 with a Nikkon 50 mm f/1.8 lens. Used a Manfrotto Befree tripod.

Inspiration

The opera house has always been a great subject to shoot and the view from this particular spot was a big favourite of mine. I wanted to push myself to see if I could take a clean long exposure shot in a crowded spot and this turned out just fine. :)

Editing

There was some minimal post-processing done in Lightroom to make some basic adjustments such as highlights, shadows, clarity etc.

In my camera bag

I am a big Nikon fan from the days of film cameras. These days I carry a Nikon D750 with 50 mm and 105 mm lens. Depending on what I go to shoot for I also take my 200-500 mm lens if required. I have a pair of Neewer speedlights and a Zomei tripod. If I am shooting landscapes I also carry my Nisi Advanced filter system.

Feedback

If someone wants to shoot something similar they need to look for a few things. The 1st thing would be to look for an interesting perspective or frame that has a few elements that will interest a viewer. The next thing is to think about the exposure requirements. Whenever I have a water body involved in a frame I like to make it a long exposure shot to make the water smooth and silky. I am big fan of light bursts. So if I can capture some light sources I make sure I adjust the aperture (f/9 to f/11) to be able to capture those bursts as part of the frame.
