Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken during my husband's first winter, and our first five-mile hike in Anchorage, AK. It was the perfect winter day, cold but the sun was shining. Spring was just around the corner. We wore cleats on our boots to prevent falling and sliding down the trail. We were extremely eager for a photo adventure. So we caught a bus close to where we lived that took us to the furthermost location up the mountain by Service high school and passed where I went to college at Alaska Pacific University. I was familiar with the area since I had been introduced to the trail when cross-country skiing.

Time

We left our home early after coffee in the hopes of arriving at our destination way before noon to catch the morning sun. The hike took all day, but we arrived at our favorite Kaladi Brother's cafe before sunset. Thankfully we did not encounter any bear or moose on or near the trail.

Lighting

The natural light was perfectly combined with the packed white snow, clear ice melting, and black moving water.

Equipment

My camera at the time was a Canon and my husband preferred Nikon. Currently, we both prefer Canon. No tripod or flash was used or needed.

Inspiration

The view combined with the natural contrast took my breath away.

Editing

Yes, I prefer to do a little post-processing and cropping when necessary. No photoshop for me...

In my camera bag

I currently use my digital Canon SX60 and am very pleased with the outcome.

Feedback

Yes, one must always consider if the subject matter is interesting, where the light is coming from, the time of day, any shadows, what's in the background, and horizon if applicable all in a split second before pushing the button.
