The history of the railways in Portugal is of great importance for the knowledge of the historical evolution of this country, from the middle of the nineteenth century. The development carried out in the country in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is due, in the sphere of communication, mainly to the railway.
The first attempts to implement this means of transport began in the 1840s, although work on the first rail link began only in 1853, the first section between Lisbon and Carregado was opened 3 years later. the railroad arrived at the border with Spain in 1863 and to Porto in 1877. In 1882 and 1887, the Beira Alta and Douro Lines were completed respectively; in 1891, the Line of the West was finished, and, in 1904, the Line of the Low Beira and the Branch of Vendas Novas. To the south, the cities of Setúbal, Évora and Beja were linked to Barreiro, respectively, in 1861, 1863, and 1864, with the railway arriving in Faro in 1889, and Vila Real de Santo António in 1909.
