Climbing to the Castle, with restored wall preserves a warlike testimony that the city was targeted, possibly during the French invasions.
On the way, look out for the architecture of several buildings, Sidónio Pais street, in which stands out the Bank of Portugal, with an eclectic language of the early twentieth century. In Rua do Pina you can see the Tavares Pessoa Amorim family mansion (with a coat of arms at the front door) and one of the two lots of Barões de Castelo Novo, a family of "noblesse" in the city. The street of the Clock adopts the name of the tower that gives hours, constructed in second half of century XV. This street goes to Praça Velha, which took the name of Praça de Camões, in the celebrations in 1880. In this square are located the old Chamber and Municipal Library, where the arms of D. Manuel still remain, as well as a headstone written in Latin with a protective vow of King John IV petitioned the Immaculate Conception. Here you can also find the old District Archive, the former Cunha Palace and the former Bishop's house.
