Location
This photo was taken on the Alps, on the north side of the Three Peaks of Lavaredo (Italy). I am an amateur photographer and I was hiking with my wife on the day of our wedding anniversary. Since she is also an amateur photographer, we decided to celebrate with a trip on a location great for photo opportunities.Time
This shot was taken in the early afternoon. Our itinerary was planned in order to have the sun conveniently placed for a shot on the Three Peaks from that perspective. Funny enough, when we got to that position I spotted this unexpectedly beautiful landscape on the opposite side - the Three Peaks were actually on my back when I took this picture. The weather was changing rapidly from a sunny sky with scattered clouds to an overcast with incoming rain.Lighting
The light was continuously shifting from hard to soft, depending on the movement of the clouds. A slight mist was forming towards the horizon. I could not wait for long, since we had to move fast to reach a shelter for the upcoming rain, but I was lucky enough to capture a moment when the sun was conveniently softened, but still capable of generating shadows to highlight shapes and depth.Equipment
Canon 6D with EF 70-200mm f/4 IS USM. Although I had a tripod with me, I did not use it to take this photo, since I needed the freedom to capture the moment when an excursionist moved in the position I wanted.Inspiration
I was captured by the beauty of the landscape, with the dramatic lines of an overhanging point and steep mountains in the background. The inspiring moment happened when an excursionist approached the edge of the ridge.Editing
The post processing I made was mostly done to reduce an excessive soft look caused by the light mist. Working on contrast and sharpness selectively helped to add more depth. Adjusting the colors was also useful to make the ridge on the foreground to stand from the background. I also increased contrast on the clouds, in order to have a more dramatic sky.In my camera bag
Sharing this passion with my wife means that I have to share also equipment! But it is totally worth it, since this way we can both enjoy our passion at the same time, not having the other getting bored or putting pressure on you to hurry. I usually bring 2 camera bodies (Canon 6D and 7D), an EF 70-200mm, EF 24mm and 50mm prime lenses, an EF-S 17-55. Quite heavy but, as I said, I have to bring equipment for 2. Depending on the situation, I may add a 105mm macro, speedlite flashes and a tripod.Feedback
Good planning is essential. Looking for pictures online of the location you chose may help you find the shot you want. A software to predict sun position (as well as moon, stars, milky way if you like night photography) is also very useful. Nonetheless, patience and luck are always your best weapons! Finally, as it happened to me for this shot, always look around, the good picture may be behind you.
