This photo was taken in July 2015 at an airshow called The Royal International Air Tattoo held annually at RAF Fairford in the south west of England. One of the best international airshows still held today and an event i have regualay attended since 1983. In 2015 i spent a full 5 days at this premier airshow, that being 2 arrival days, 2 display days and departure day and enjoyed every minute of it.Time
This shot was taken on day 3 of my week at RAF Fairford , the first displays day which commenced at 10:00 with solo displays of a Greek then Polish F-16 sadly in low cloud and grey conditions which did not make for good photos , but as the morning drew on the weather brightened up to 50/50 cloud cover and by the time this display commenced at 14:05 if you got the right bit of sky it was possible to get some half decent shots.Lighting
Tricky lighting for most of this 8 hour military aviation display.Early morning mist had burned off just before noon so the afternoon shoot was held in decent light with no rain.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D5200 using a Sigma 150-500 handheld with no flash.Inspiration
As an aged regular UK airshow visitor over the years i've worked out where to be to get reasonable display shots.Editing
Shot in RAW and edited in Lightroom with a touch of HDR for some moody depth. In my camera bag
For airshow shoots i use a pair of Nikon D5200 and Sigma 18-300 for ground shots and a Sigma 150-500 for display shots , though they're all getting old and need to be replaced after 5 years of service.Feedback
For airshow photography it is important to have all weather possibilities covered, it can easily be foggy , rainy and blistering sunshine all on the same shoot. Waterproof clothes and waterproof protection for camera equipment are vital.
