Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the Isle of Skye, Scotland and shows Glamaig, which is the northernmost of Skye's Red Hills (Cuillin)

Time

The image was taken at 1pm on the 6 February 2018. It was a beautiful winters day with bright sunshine and blue skies.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the scene, which was a challenge with the bright light conditions. I used a Lee Big Stopper and an ISO of 50, to manage the challenging light conditions, It also give the swirling effect in the foreground. This is caused by bubbles on the water flow.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D MKiv camera, a Canon L series 17-40mm Lens. This was mounted on a Manfrotto MT055x Tripod.

Inspiration

The Isle of Skye is a beautiful Isle, with the most amazing Landscapes. I was with a group we had been out shooting that morning and were returning to the place we were staying. This location was nearby and the snow capped Glamaig looked stunning against the blue sky, it just called out to be photographed.

Editing

I did not have to do very much post processing with this image. Slight adjustments were made to the exposure and shadows to lighten the image, then I altered the highlights to darken the sky a little. All that was then required was contrast adjustments to give the final image.

In my camera bag

I am a Canon Fan, so I have the Canon 5D MKiv camera, a Canon L series 17-40mm Lens, the Canon 24 - 105mm and 100 - 400 Mkii. I always carry my Manfrotto MT055x Tripod. I have Lee filters which, I use a lot, which are the Big and little stoppers, .6 and .9 soft grads.

Feedback

Patience and planning is what is required for landscape photography. I make use of three apps, TPE, which allows me to look at sunset, sunrise and moonset times at any location. Clear Outside, this is a weather app but also gives, wind speed and visibility predictions, really useful. Lastly Nautide, this provides tide times and weather information for coastal locations. Even then the weather can be different to that forecast when you arrive at a location but waiting patiently can have its advantages things can change so quickly or present a different back drop for the shot you want that maybe a little more dramatic, however be prepared to visit a location more than once to get the shot you are after.
