Behind The Lens

Location

It’s always difficult to get hold of pretty cars to photograph, so I had to shoot this image at a Mercedes-Benz dealership as it was standing on the floor.

Time

The shot can be done any time of day as long as it is done indoors and not too close to a window.

Lighting

Setting the camera on manual mode you’re able to underexpose the background completely and by using a speed light and diffuser very close to the car, you can focus soft light on a small portion of the car.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D750 with a Sigma art series 50mm lens. For support I use a Benro tripod and the lighting was done using a Godox AD200 speed light with a beauty dish and a diffuser. The camera and speedlight were triggered using Yongnuo radio triggers.

Inspiration

Creating with light and my love for cars inspired me to take this photo. As photographers light is our paintbrush and you can create anything if you know how to overpower ambient light with artificial light sources. The reflective surfaces of a car also makes it one of the most difficult subjects to photograph well. So I developed a lighting technique that focused diffused light on a small portion of a car, given it a “matt” finish. The disadvantage of this technique is that the results are so amazing, you can’t stop taken photos.

Editing

Every image consist of about 10 photos that I post-processed in Photoshop using the layering method.

Feedback

It’s easy to overpower ambient light indoors with speed lights. Use the camera in manual mode and don’t be afraid to move the light source very close to your subject, even if it’s in the frame of the image. Take a lot of photos, the best way to learn is by trail and error.
