Location
This photo was taken on a farm near Clarens, South Africa. The farmer is a passionate classic car & truck collector. He Moved the truck to a cool location where we can light paint it.Time
I normally set up in late afternoon, compose and focus with the camera on a tripod. Then wait for dusk. Needs the low light to allows a slow shutter speed of 30 seconds.Lighting
I underexposed the background with 2 stops, then light painted the truck using a custom built 1 meter LED light wand. Light painting with a 1 meter light wand create very soft light over a large area that works perfect for big subjects like this truck.Equipment
Nikon D750, 50mm Sigma Art Series lens, Pocket Wizard wireless triggers, Benro tripod and LED light wand.Inspiration
Using artificial light sources to create images is my passion. Painting with light allows me to highlight specific areas of an image and this gives me total controll over the end result of the final image.Editing
I normally take 5 - 10 images, which I layered in Photoshop to combine the best light painted areas and to get rid of light streaks. In my camera bag
Always in my bag is Nikon D750, 50mm and 35mm Sigma Art series lenses. Wireless triggers, 2 x Speed lights, polarizer filters, LED light wand and Benro tripod.Feedback
Do research on light painting and experiment a lot. It’s lots of fun and the more you experiment, the better results you’ll get. But be warned, you’ll get addicted to light painting.
