Location
Front and center to the New Orleans Metropolitan Museum of Art (NOMA) is a circular pond that is home to a water lily display many months of the year. I visit it often for the sheer beauty of the flowers and in this case the reflected leaf. It is always a treat to me to shoot this spot when the light is soft and creates a magnificent reflection.Time
This shot was taken in late afternoon giving a soft golden light to the subject. This type of light facilitates nice reflections.Lighting
From multiple shoots at this location, I've found the lighting brings out the best of the colors and reflections in the mid to late afternoon. This time frame also adds to the warmth of the color palette which has given a nice yellow-orange range to the subject.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Nikon 5300 and a Tamron Zoom 18-270. No tripod, no flash necessary. I love the flexibility to shoot the subject from various angles and positions making this my fav 'go-to' combo equipment.Inspiration
I am a lover of beauty.. capturing it in natural settings and bringing the essence of the subject to life in editing. I shoot weekly so I am always scouting out different settings, time of day, and weather conditions~each providing a different picture even when it's the same subject. When I found this water garden, it became one that I would visit often. On a previous visit I shot a lily that had a beautiful reflection of the flower itself along the the root system... so my eye was perked on this visit to watch for reflections.Editing
I did regular saturation, contrast, clarity to this shot initially. As my editing skills increased after taking a Lightroom course, my new skill set allowed me to work with the background which removed distractions. This drew attention to the beauty of the subject. In my camera bag
I carry my Nikon 5300 with a Tamron lens for wide range of shots with me almost always. Depending on the location I've chosen I may include my Nikon Macro or Long Telephoto. (The long telephoto is very difficult for me at my mature age and small physical size so I only use it when my friend is available to assist. I carry a Gorilla small tripod for stability only. Somewhere in the car, lol, will be my full size tripod as a 'just in case'. I have a couple of filters but am still experimenting with them.Feedback
As everyone knows, lighting makes the shot. This makes timing (1) my most valuable advice. Having this location relatively near, I can plan for the low sun in the sky to cast the golden light and cast a beautiful reflection. Practice makes perfect (2). And my most valuable tip.... never stop learning (3)!!! Take a course, watch videos, and by all means...... shoot~shoot~shoot!!!! (4).. Happy shooting! adira
