This photo was taken in Laguna Beach. Living close to the water has allowed me to get out and take a lot more beach photos recently, and I've really started to fall in love with the texture the water offers from above.Time
This photo was taken around high noon actually! I know as a photographer you would typically never want to shoot when the sun is at its highest, giving off that really strong and unflattering light, but for drone stuff I don't mind it!Lighting
Like I mentioned in the time of the day, the sun in the high sky actually helped me. lit up what was under the surface and really picked up the textures just below the water. I typically wouldn't want to shoot in this light but it works for the ocean stuff.Equipment
I shot this on my DJI Mavic Pro. I was on the rock just to the left of the photo.Inspiration
I'm always trying to find new places along the beach that have something interesting going on, whether it's the tide, rocks, or just groups of people. On this day I went down to my favorite spot not looking for anything in particular, but this girl in a red dress really popped out to me! She was just standing there looking at the waves in this cove and I knew I had to line up the shot with the drone.Editing
I did a lot of post on this photo, as it was an experimental edit to test out some different style. I really wanted to bring out the girl which was hard since the sand was so orange, so be bringing down and cooling off everything in the shot it allowed for the blue in the water to really pop, as well as the texture, and to have nothing compete with the girl on land.In my camera bag
My bag is a little.... large, and often times I consider my car just an extension of my bag. But currently I shoot on my 5d mkiii with the Tamron G2 24-70 f2.8 lens. It's my go to for adventure and landscape, but for portraits I shift to the Sigma 35mm ART Lens. Then of course I have my DJI Mavic Pro, since it's so small it's a must to bring everywhere I go. The last piece in my gear is the Aquatech water housing unit. Since I live near the ocean I like to jump in and take sea-scape/ocean shots, and it's really allowed me to experience in the ocean in another way besides just my drone.Feedback
If you have a drone I would just say to take it up in the air and see what you can find! I typically look for interesting patterns or textures, maybe a contrasting color or unique shape. There's so many architectural and urban drone shots to be had as well as landscape ones. Experiment with different times of day and see what yields the best results for you! You never know what you might see while you're up in the air.
