Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my home studio in Kingaroy, QLD (Australia). It was taken as part of my assessment for the Commercial module for Food Photography in my Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging I am currently studying.

Time

This was taken in mid afternoon. It took me quite some time to prepare the cake as I also did all the prep work for my food photography as well as photograph it. My studio is located out of the house so I had to carefully carry it over there without tripping and ruining as it took over an hour just to get the look right.

Lighting

I wanted a soft lighting, so I used my softbox from the left hand side, and an overhead softbox and blocked the light on the right to create the softer shadows. It created a beautiful lighting that was not stark and overpowering but rather complimentary.

Equipment

I used a Canon 70d camera, with a 50mm lens on. This shot was hand held - with me up on a chair as I was taking different angles from the side and above. The camera settings were : f/2.5; 1/500 sec; ISO 400. There was no flash used, the only lighting was from the studio lights.

Inspiration

I was inspired to take the photo as mentioned previously, as part of my studies. However, I wanted to create a different look with this once hence the love hearts in the sauce, it would make a great romantic, or valentines day dessert. Having photographed food and learning about it, I am inspired to do more!

Editing

I did very minimal post processing on the photo. I shoot everything in the RAW format and import into lightroom to process. I did minimal tweaks to contrast, highlights/shadows/blacks to get it to just how I liked it. Otherwise, the rest was done in camera with getting correct lighting etc in the first place.

In my camera bag

In my bag I normally have my Canon 70D - I love this camera! It is a great mid range one, and the absolute bargain bonus is, of course, the flip screen as those of us who are old and creaky and knees are shot - can take photos from different angles ie down low without having to get down low to look through a viewfinder just pop out the screen! Or odd angles as my camera can end up being on the tripod. Also over the head shooting above the crowd. The lens I normally use the most for everyday shooting/landscapes is my 18-135mm it is very versatile. The 50mm and 100mm are great in the studio for macro and other photography, plus portraits. Also in my bag normally is the 10-18mm wide angle lens for landscapes. Plus a heap of batteries, I rather have too many than not enough!!! I find live view can suck the batteries dry pretty quickly lol. Other than that always in my bag are a variety of strengths of ND filters and a remote camera shutter. Plus a snake bite kit - gotta be prepared here in Australia when out in the field.

Feedback

Patience, planning and practice. As mentioned I used studio lighting so if you have this makes it simpler. But you could also try with a side window lighting rather than the side softbox. You need to work quickly with food, as once it is prepped things can melt very easily (including you under the lights!) so working out your idea of lighting, even taking sample shots with a stand in to check your lighting before you do final prep of the food. Look at some different food magazine photos for ideas for inspiration.
