Location
I took this photo on our five acre property, down in what we call the 'middle' paddock.Time
There was a nice sunset, and I was down visiting my two miniature horses. They always come up when I have the camera, thinking they are going to get fed, though end up disappointed!Lighting
It was late in the day, after sunset but the warm colours of the sunset just looked lovely and made my horse seem to glow in the same warm manner.Equipment
I used my Canon 70D for this image.. It was handheld, with no flash.Inspiration
I was inspired to take this photo as my miniature mare Foxy looked so beautiful. I was doing some creative angles, as she is so tiny I had to get down low to get below her view point, as I wanted the sunset behind her as well. There was a bit of a breeze, hence the wind tossed, messy look to her mane and forelock which just added to the charm of the photo. I think it really captures her cheeky, slightly wild look. She is not called the Diva for nothing *grin*.Editing
I post processed the image in lightroom, with the usual adjustments to exposure, contrast etc. I had to bring up the shadows a bit and some noise reduction; because I had taken the image hand held in low light the original image was somewhat dark. It was also cropped. In my camera bag
In my camera bag I normally have my Canon 70D, it has been a faithful camera that I drag everywhere. My normal 'go to' lens is my Canon 18 - 135mm although I do have a variety of canon lenses. Also in my bag are a heap of various strength ND filters, polarisers, remote timer, cleaning gear and heaps of spare batteries!Feedback
To capture something similar would definitely look at a sunset. If you took this shot mid afternoon it just would not quite have the same rich tones. Getting down low is a must to below the eye level of the animal you are photographing. Adjust your settings so that you can have a high enough shutter speed to be able to take this hand held, you would not be able to do this with a tripod, seeing as horses can move suddenly and Foxy was not tied up and as it was, she was walking towards me!
