Location
This photo was taken in my apartment bedroom. I’ve always preferred the coziness and honesty of shooting in actual homes instead of studios.Time
I generally stick to shooting early in the day when the sun is rising or later in the day when the sun is setting. That mostly depends on which direction my windows face at any apartment I’ve lived in. I believe this shot was earlier in the day.Lighting
I let the sun do the talking. I almost exclusively avoid using any sort of artificial lighting or bounces. Unless it’s absolutely necessary... I prefer the challenge of forming my art around the sun and available light.Equipment
At the time, I was using a Canon 6D + Tamron 28-75mm 2.8.Inspiration
This particular model had never shot before. For her first time, I wanted to introduce her to the process with something light and easy. Bedside photos are a fantastic way for me to help get them warmed up and to help us both find our groove as a team.Editing
Of course. At this period in my editing, I was leaning a little too heavily into the yellow highlights. My newer style of editing focuses more on true-to-life colors or at least more tastefully chosen highlight/shadow tinting. As I’ve evolved and grown as a photographer, there’s a point where I look back and can see distinct points where my work shifted. This is one of them.In my camera bag
Just my camera, lens, spare batteries, and grey card.Feedback
Practice makes perfect. Follow and emulate the work of those you admire until you find yourself stepping out of their shadow and becoming your own artist.
