Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was at a wedding of a relative.

Time

The wedding was at noon with reception afterward.

Lighting

It was a rainy day, fairly low light, but the reception was inside a pavilion with glass walls.

Equipment

Canon EOS T3i with a Canon 18-135mm lens at 50mm. I was using on-camera flash, hand-held.

Inspiration

The servers had just brought out the cupcakes before the bride & groom cut their cake. This little girl could not wait and licked a cupcake, but got caught. A smile should get her out of trouble, right?

Editing

The photo was processed using Lightroom 5. It was cropped and brightened to account for inside light conditions.

In my camera bag

Today, I use a Canon 70D with a T3i as a 2nd camera. The 70D is set with a 85mm prime and a 28-105mm on the T3i. I carry a 70-300mm for candid photos I have a 430 and a 600 Canon flash.

Feedback

Weddings are a formal event where many "list" photos are expected. But that does not define the unique nature of each wedding. In between formal poses, a lot is going on. Keep your eyes open for unexpected moments. Try to be a part of the event and get a feel for the moment. Children and older relatives make especially good candid photos.
