Location
This photo was taken on the beach next to Kona on my trip to Big Island, Hawaii.Time
My friend wanted to show me this beach because there are always lots of turtles sunbathing here right before sunset .So this image was captured around 5pm, right before sun started setting, July 2016Lighting
I was trying to capture light illuminating all the textures and patterns on the turtle without blowing out the baxhground. So i positioned myself with sun to the right of me.Equipment
I used Canon 5dmarkiii and Canon EF24-70mm. got down on the ground, hand held, no flash since i didn't want to disturb the turtle.Inspiration
I really love photographing turtles. to me they look so peaceful and it brings me inner peace whenever i am on the beach and i see these gorgeous creatures.Editing
I did do post processing Lightroom. I opened up shadows to show more detail in the picture. Used Graduated Filter to match the exposure of the sky to the rest of the picture. Increased saturation and contrast by a bit to make picture a little more vivid. I wanted this photograph to be colorful and vivid, just like i see Hawaii in my daily life, so hope my editing reflects that and will inspire people to visit Hawaii. In my camera bag
I am mostly a landscape photographer so i always have my Canon 5dmarkiii, EF 16-35mm 2.8ii. LEE Filters, and tripod. On days when i take pictures of my son i just carry my 5dmarkiii and Sigma 50mm 1.4 ART lens.Feedback
Turtles usually hang out on the beach towards the end of the day. I would suggest going to the beach few hours prior to sunset. That is also the best time to capture them in the most softest light possible, which creates beautiful sun kissed look without harsh shadows. They are very still majority of the time, which makes it easy for photographers who don't shoot animals to practice composition.Have a zoom lens with you, since in Hawaii you are legally not allowed to be within 10 feet of turtles.
