Behind The Lens

Location

This is my beautiful boy Devi. He is a Rhodesian Ridgeback and he was 8 months old when this photo was taken, in our garden in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Time

It was mid-morning and our little boy Devi was enjoying the sunshine and rolling around in the grass. As soon as he saw the camera though, he sat right up and posed for me. The shadows of the tree overhead formed a perfect halo around him. This gave the background some soft textures and beautiful lighting.

Lighting

Since it was mid-morning the sunlight was not too harsh. The shade from the tree softened the light even more, giving a gentle shine to Devi's coat but also not drowning out his deeper colors.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3100 digital camera with a 18-55mm lens. No tripod or flash was used and the angle and lighting were all naturally formed.

Inspiration

There is nothing more humbling than watching a puppy enjoy the simple things in life. The peace and happiness painted on Devi's face as he rolled in the grass and basked in the sunshine inspired me to try and capture it. He struck this pose for me and the look of curiosity on his face just melted my heart.

Editing

The contrast was touched up to deepen the shadows and bring out the highlights on his fur.

In my camera bag

I always carry around my small Nikon digital camera to capture anything that catches my eye. When I know I am going somewhere requiring more equipment, I always have my Nikon D3100 camera with two lenses at hand. A 18-55mm lens for portraits and up close nature shots and for wildlife or landscapes I bring along a 55-300mm lens.

Feedback

Just take pictures of the beautiful moments in life! You never know when the right place and time will pop up and a wonderous photo will beg to be taken!
