Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken on the gravel road right in front of our house.

Time

I shot it about 35 minutes before sunset.

Lighting

I wanted the light to be just at the right spot. I wanted it high enough to shine through the flag and low enough to get a silhouette. I did have to lay out flat on my belly to shoot up enough at them to get the light where I wanted behind them.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 5D Mark III using a Canon L 24-70 lens.

Inspiration

It was fourth of July weekend and I wanted to have an image to celebrate that with my children. I had recently gotten this flag and I had this idea of my kiddos running with it as a silhouette. I had them Stand in a line and on three I had them run across the road. Our dog was a happy surprise when she decided to jump in behind them! Coming from a military family, and having a lot of family (and friends) that are currently active duty military, to me this said freedom... and what they are all working and fighting for.

Editing

I added the sky overlay. It is a Robin Chavez overlay. It was sunset when the image was taken, but, the sky was not very colorful that night and this sky seemed to fit the mood of it perfect.

In my camera bag

I almost always have my Canon 5D Mark III with me, sometimes when I am out and about I will take along my Canon t2i instead (as it is a lot lighter). I usually have my Canon L 24-70 attached to either, but, I have a 50mm, a fisheye and a lensbaby spark that are always packed along as well.

Feedback

For silhouettes timing your sun behind your subject is the most important part. Getting down very low to your subjects helps as well to be sure to get their whole body (down to their feet) silhouetted. Finding an open area with very little around will make your post work much easier and helps make your subjects really pop. With silhouette shots you can really crank your shutter speed which helps capture the movement very crisply. A lot of times you can achieve an amazing silhouette and sky in camera, but, if you have something in mind don't be afraid to play with post processing to get your image exactly where you want it!
