Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken during a flight on EAA's 1928 Ford Tri-Motor around Fort Worth.

Time

This is one of my favorite photos of the Ford Tri-Motor. It was taken in the afternoon.

Lighting

The lighting is natural sunlight.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3200 and Nikkor 18-55 zoom lens that I use an UV filter on. No tripod was used. It was taken free hand by holding the lens against the plexiglass window to reduce glare and vibration.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the raw power of the radial engine along with the minimal gauges that ate on the engine pylon. The shiny sheet metal adds to the age of the plane that is 88 years old.

Editing

I try to do very minimal processing. I just level it up and crop the photo so it is more appealing visually.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a few extra lenses such as my Tamron 18-270 zoom, Nikkor 55-200 zoom lens, soft cloths, Frog Lube lens cleaning kit, and a speed light.the

Feedback

Go to your local airport and airshows. Get to know pilots who have a plane and are if they will take you up. Toss in some cash for gas. Take tons of pictures and keep your standards high. I may take 20-30 pictures, but maybe 5 make my personal cut. Just when you've taken that perfect shot that you and everyone else loves, try to top that. Don't settle for what you think is the best shot, strive for increased perfection.
