Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken from my home in an empty room. For more than 10 years I decided to no longer hold a studio; instead, I move to different places or I use a room in my house. Working in this way forces me to be more creative and allows me to vary my composition.

Time

In fact, I do not remember exactly what time this photo was taken .. probably in the evening. When I do this kind of project, I usually close the windows with wooden panels. Cut off from the outside, we have the impression that time stops. There is no longer the subject, the shadow, and the light.

Lighting

It was the first time I worked with so many sources of light. I used 3 lights on the model and a light to illuminate the wall behind. In addition, you will notice that there are 3 levels of shadows on the thigh of the model; it is a transition between shadow and light that testifies to each source. We also see another source of light under the foot of the model.

Equipment

It was shot using a Canon EOS 40D with the basic EF-S18-55mm f3.5/5.6 lens. A mix of softboxes, umbrellas and grid spotlights.

Inspiration

For me photography is a hobby. Most of my projects are either poses chosen by the models, or technical or artistic challenges that I give myself. With this image, I experimented with the Golden Spiral application on the model. You can see an example by following this link: https://1drv.ms/i/s!AguF9qsAUp6cit95sVpN1RqdYvUm0A

Editing

I do. Original was in color so I had to convert it to B&W. Then I changed contrasts to pop out the image.

In my camera bag

Usually I bring with me a big bag containing 2 studio flashes with a softbox and an umbrella. I also have a small reflector. I usually have a Canon 5D MkII with SIGMA lenses (30mm, 50mm, 85mm) and Canon 135mm. Today I only work with PRIME lenses. I also use a remote shutter and a tablet connected to my camera.

Feedback

Find an image you like. Then try to reproduce it. With practice you'll be able to cast your shadows like you want. There is no secret here, just practice, practice and practice again. The digital world is an invaluable asset when it comes to the studying of photography; with the previews or live stream to a computer or tablet, you can have a direct feedback of your setup.
