Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in a field behind my customers house in scotby, a little village just outside the City of Carlisle, the most northern city in England just on the border of scotland.

Time

I love to shoot during the golden hour, especially when my subject is a child, I can't resist the warm magical feel and artistic effect the light gives, I also like that I'm able to easily control the light and it's effects, I'm quite partial to a flair. This shot was taken around 7.30pm, past Jake's bedtime, I like when that happens, children have a tendency to glaze over with a tired stare.

Lighting

I wanted an American country feel for this image and loved the way the sun caught the leaves of the tree.

Equipment

I used a canon 5D mark iii and a 70-200 f2.8 L ll USM lens

Inspiration

The weather is nothing special in the north of England but we'd been having some unusually beautiful weather at the end of September, I had a customer booked with 6 children, she wanted something that captured their innocence and imagination. The children's father hung the tyre especially for their shoot, .little Jake loved cowboys so I added the hat and gun to finish the shot

Editing

I wanted it to have a little bit of a vintage feel, I warmed it up a little, lifted the shadows and played around with the tones in the shadows, sharpened it up a little and applied a slight vignette, just to calm the highlights a little.

In my camera bag

I never pack everything but always take my Canon 5D mark iii, my absolute favorite lens, the 70-200 f2.8L ll USM, a 24-105 f4 L IS USM, a 50mm f1.8 lens and a speedlite 600 that I never really use but you never know do you?

Feedback

Obviously, light is key, as the sun is coming up and as the sun is going down are the best times for light quality. When it comes to children, it helps to get onto their level, learn what their favorite thing to do is, have a conversation about it, do something silly or, if all else fails, ask them who pumped, gaurenteed to get a giggle... Also lots of high 5's help them to become your best friend, that way it's easier to get the best out of the child. I love to use props, giving a child something to hold or wear helps them concentrate which keeps them still for a little while, which helps, you know what they say about working with children and animals.
