Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a little bush just down the road from where I live. I packed up all my gear and headed down the road looking rather strange in a poofy white dress and jandals with 3 bags hanging off my shoulders.

Time

This photo was taken around lunch time, I wanted the warmth of the afternoon sun and for it to be streaming through the trees on a certain angle.

Lighting

All natural light! I managed to catch the sun in a perfect position for this shoot, as it created a great warm tone to the photo to add to the affect of the pages being on fire.

Equipment

I shoot all my photos with a Canon 600D, this was my first DSLR camera and I haven't even tried looking for other models! Such a great camera with a handy flip screen for self portraits. I positioned my camera on a tripod just off the track, lucky for me the wind wasn't blowing hard this day so I layered all the images perfectly. I used my wide angle lens; 10mm-18mm canon. This was one of my first surreal shots with it.

Inspiration

Rosie Hardy has always been one of my biggest inspirations for surreal photography; Looking through her work always helps me think outside the box. I wanted to create a surreal photo that wasn't so much impossible, viewers love photos that aren't 100% out of the everyday reach.

Editing

Ofcourse! This photo is a collection of about 10 different other photos that were layered together in photoshop. To get the screwed up paper looking like it was floating through the trees I stood with each piece of paper lightly gripping it in the corner and positioning it where I would want it in the photo. In photoshop I would then erase the rest of the background around each piece of paper and layer it on top of my main picture; being me. This process took about 8 hours all up, which I would then import the finished photoshopped image into Adobe Lightroom and play around with the lighting.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my 18mm-55mm lens, 55mm-200mm lens and my 10mm-18mm lens, with my Canon 600D, Speedlite, memory card holder and various batteries incase I need to use my external flash.

Feedback

Your tripod (besides your camera and lens) is your biggest asset! Without it you can't layer all the images together in photoshop properly because you will have trouble matching them all up. And always think outside the box, the weirder the better!
