Location
This photo was taken in my Living room.Time
This photo was taken on the approach to Christmas on a dark winters eveningLighting
For this photo I had a ring mounted flash on the lens of my camera, as I did not want to highlight the whole room I only wanted to light my subject. This worked better than I thought and it highlighted the subject very well and gave a nice light in the eyes.Equipment
For this image I used a ring mounted flash with no tripod, on my Panasonic fz200 bridge camera. I love this camera and it is so versatile with a lens range of 24-600m and an f-stop of 2.8 all the way through the focal range.Inspiration
My wife and I love Christmas and I love a shallow depth of field so I wanted to create a Christmas image to remember of our first pet, in this photo I wanted to create the bokeh effect in the decorative lights in the background yet I didn't want to over do it as I still wanted to see some of the decorations on the tree.Editing
For this image there was very little processing a small amount of lightening on the highlights just to add a little to the image. In my camera bag
I used to just carry a Panasonic fz200 some Filters for different lights a reversing ring and my 50mm prime lens to get some close up Macro shots and my Tripod. However since upgrading my camera I now carry my Canon 80d, with my 50mm prime lens, my 100-300mm lens, filters a tripod and of course my trusted fz200Feedback
The advice I would give is know your subject, I have known this old boy for 12 years now and I know what he will and will not do. I didn't want to shoot him straight on and I think shooting him slightly from the side added to the picture. Try and get some light into the subjects Eyes just to add to the subject. If you have got the lovely decorations on the tree, if your shooting with a Christmas tree that is, then don't make the depth of field to shallow as you will want to see them. If however you only have lights on your tree then you may want to add less depth into the picture to really make the lights big, if this is to your taste.
