This shot was taken in Bagan, Myanmar, in a place called The Valley of a Thousand Temples. This is a very sacred place that I had the good fortune of visiting with my mum in March 2015. I'm standing on the roof of a Pagoda very early in the morning.Time
The exact time of day this shot was taken was 6.46 am, sunrise. I witnessed 3 consecutive beautiful sunrises in anticipation of this shot and I think it captures the mood perfectly.Lighting
The particles of smoke and dust from the local fields gave this photo an added dimension that I had not expected. It was interesting to witness the effect these atmospheric conditions had on the quality of the light and as a result the final photo. I am very happy with this image and feel these conditions only served to add a more mystical dimension that only adds to the natural beauty of this landscape.Equipment
As I was limited with what I could carry to the roof of the Pagoda so this shot was taken with a Canon Eos 5DMIII with a EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens.Inspiration
Before going to Bagan I had envisioned a shot like this. I knew I wanted to capture a sunrise and had already planned it in my head. I got up each of the mornings I was there and climbed to the roof of one of the Pagodas to see and experience what was on offer. My inspiration came from the natural beauty of this place; the landscape, the stunning pagodas and the local people. I felt a certain type of magic that manifested itself in a deep connection to the far past.Editing
I did quite a bit of post production with his image as I actually merged 3 photos into one. I always shoot raw which gives me the widest range of post-production opportunities. Part of this process included colour correction and the use of luminance masks that helped me immensely with precise adjustments.In my camera bag
In my equipment bag I tend to carry the following. EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZE Polariser filter, neutral density filter, a tripod and a remote shutter release.Feedback
My advice to someone wishing to capture an early morning sunrise shot is to be persistent. Do not limit yourself to just one opportunity but try the same shot on different days. I believe patience, persistence and opportunity are all major skills with landscape photography.
