Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph was taken on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem Utah, where I work. The architecture on campus is fairly modern, with a common style running throughout most of the buildings.

Time

I intentionally took the photo in the late afternoon to accentuate the shadows.

Lighting

Time of day was everything for this photograph. The lighting is obviously natural, so I timed the photo so that the shadows would be the most important and most prominent component of the image.

Equipment

The photograph was taken handheld with a Nikon 14-24mm lens (set to 14mm) mounted on a Nikon D800E camera.

Inspiration

I have long been intrigued with the interaction between the architecture on the campus of Utah Valley University and the striking shadows produced by that architecture. I watched for clear skies and great shadows to take the shot.

Editing

Post-processing was modest. I always adjust the contrast of my images in PhotoShop, as I did with this photo. I also chose to convert the image to black and white to accentuate the forms and textures in the image.

In my camera bag

Honestly, I own too many cameras. I love my Sony A6000 and A6500 mirrorless cameras (as well as my Sony RX100 and Canon EOS-M), but for serious photographic work I often turn to my Nikon D800E or Nikon Z7, often matched with a Nikon 14-24mm lens.

Feedback

With architectural photography, I find the interplay between architectural details and shadows to be very compelling. An ultra wide-angle lens helps the viewer "enter" into the scene and it increases the dramatic effect of shadows running toward the viewer. I recommend scoping out similar potential photos ahead of time and various times of day to establish the time when the shadows will be at their most dramatic.
