Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a whim just outside of Estes Park Colorado. My wife and I had decided to take a last minute “babymoon” vacation when she was about 6 months pregnant. Along with some beautiful photos I collected and cherish of her I was able to capture this moment in the river. This shot has stuck with me and remains one of my favorite outdoor shots I have composed.

Time

Shortly before sunset, however the mountains and canyons are huge in Estes so the light had already began to fade for the day.

Lighting

As I st up my tripod in the frigid water I knew I was loosing my lighting fast. I began snapping metered photos while doing my best to not lose my footing on the wet ground below me. It wasn’t until later that night when my now wife and I had gotten back to our KOA campsite that I looked and realized some of the magic I had captured in the river.

Equipment

A tripod was essential for this shot as the light was fading quick. I was able to save deatail and give a soft look to the water by increasing my exposure length and layering multiple shots in post.

Inspiration

I am always inspired by the beauty of nature, especially in Estes Park. My wife and I were driving along the highway just outside of town when I spotted an embankment that was just a few yards from the road. I knew the lighting was perfect so I jumped at my opportunity!

Editing

Like I mentioned before this image is a composite of three photos layered together. Some shadows have been lightened and a little clarity bump to bring in some more detail but over all her little post outside of the initial layering.

In my camera bag

This was shot on a d700 with a manfroto carbon travel tripod.

Feedback

Don’t be afraid to play with your settings! When you really practice and change them up you can see amazing results. It can be tough to experiment when you are being paid are trying to take photos of clients so don’t be afraid to live a little when you hit your next big adventure!
