Location
I took this photo from Brooklyn, NY - DUMBO to be precise - looking out across The Manhattan Bridge into ManhattanTime
This photo was taken around 8:00pmLighting
There was very little light left in the sky and I began to see the city lights reflect against the underside of the clouds. I put the camera in manual and opened the exposure for 30 seconds at ISO-100 and f-stop f/10 and 14mm focal length and at max aperture of 3.61328125Equipment
I use a Panasonic GH1 with a Lumix 14-45mm lens, tripod and no flash. I also used a remote to trigger the shutter without camera shake.Inspiration
I took up photography about 4 years ago and am learning all the time. I am still a novice in terms of technique, but passionate about my art. I had never done a city scape and I had never done a long exposure. I saw some amazing examples of long exposure photos from my peers on Viewbug and was simply inspired to attempt to learn how to do this. So I got online to research the techniques on how to take these types of photographs. Once I thought that I understood what was invloved, I jumped in the car and drove to Brooklyn from Greenwich, CT and just tried. By trial and error, I experimented with shorter and longer exposures, different apertures to have a better understanding of the multitude of options available to me in manual mode. I loved the whole experience. The journey of discovery was as rewarding to me as taking the photograph.Editing
I did do some processing, yes. My darkroom is Adobe Lightroom. This is where I express the art in my photograph - the eye is so much more powerful than whatever the camera is able to capture. Creating the depth and visual impact becomes an exercise in memory for me, fine tuning color saturation, contrast and light balance in such a way as to emphasis a reality, a truth as I experienced it at the time I took the photograph. When I have achieved the visual balance that seduces my eye, the moment is captured, an expression of the truth I experienced when I took it. What is fascinating about this art is that while digital allows for easy replication, every photo is a prototype - the product of a moment in time, whose expression is defined by the emotion captured in post-production and my memory of it.In my camera bag
I have a Flipside 400AW camera bag. I carry 3 cameras, 2 Panasonic GH1 and 1 Panasonic GF1. I have 2 Prime Lenses - 14mm, 20mm; 2 Zoom lenses - 14-45mm, 50-200mm. I also have a Raynox Macroscopic Lens for close ups. I also carry an assortment of filters which I am learning how to use and a Bower SFPD9260 flash, not forgetting a Vanguard Alta tripod, multiple camera batteries and chargers. When I have to go light, I use a Crumpler Five Million Dollar camera bag that allows me to go with my 2 GH1 cameras, my Zooms and Primes ...Feedback
It's a cliché but .... Just Do It! Just go out there and experiment, play, do not be afraid to get it wrong. We are so lucky that we live in the digital age ... I have enormous respect for those pioneers before us, and those amongst us today, who create their art on film - they are the true masters.
